History of BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur:
The foundation stone of B.R.D. Medical College, Gorakhpur was laid on 8th November, 1969 by late Shri C.B. Gupta, the then chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. The institution was named after “Baba Raghav Das”, a devoted freedom fighter and Sarvodaya leader of this area. The appearance of a medical college in the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, so called ‘Purvanchal’, improved the availability of tertiary health care in this relatively backward area.
The first batch of 50 students was admitted in August, 1972. MBBS teaching was started from 8th August, 1972 under the dynamic leadership of Professor P.L. Shukla as the Founder Principal and Professor of Anatomy at Government Polytechnic College for next 1½ years, as the building construction was in progress.
The teaching hospital complex named “Nehru Chikitsalaya” (Nehru Hospital) came into existence in August, 1974. Now, it has got over 800 indoor beds and outpatient department for various medical disciplines.
 
Infrastructure: The total area of BRD Medical College campus is 147.6 acres, and total constructed area is more than 12,000 sq.mts.
1.      Hospital building: Nehru Hospital is a G+3 level 700 bedded hospital, with an additional 108 beds in the epidemic ward. It accommodates various departments of clinical subjects, X-ray facilities, central registration of patients (indoor and outdoor), emergency services, intensive care unit, epidemic ward, blood bank, drug distribution center, ART and VCTC Centre for treatment and diagnosis of HIV positive patients, DOTS and microscopy center for diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis patients, and 1 Lecture Theatre (seating capacity=450). The hospital also manages a diagnostic center as public – private partnership for advanced investigations like computerized tomography scan (CT Scan) and Doppler ultrasound. 
2.      Administrative/ Teachingblock:This college block is G+3 level building which accommodates the Principal Office, Finance office, Lecture Theatres (seating capacity=150 each), Examination Hall and various pre-clinical, and para-clinical departments.
3.      Hostels Accommodation:
a.       Boys Hostels                                                                            :453 rooms.
·         Rajendra Hostel for junior boy students.
·         Gautam Hostel for senior boy students and male interns.
b.      Girls Hostels                                                                           : 151 rooms.
·         Sarojini Hostel for junior girl students.
·         Indira Hostel for senior girl students and female interns
c.       P.G. Hostels                                                                             : 98 rooms.
·         48 Officers Hostel for postgraduate students.
·         New PG Hostel for postgraduate students.
d.      Nursing Hostels                                                                       : 100 rooms.
Each hostel is under the administration of a warden and an assistant warden. The students manage their own mess in the hostels, which provides kitchen and dining halls.

Undergraduate & Postgraduate education:
The annual intake capacity of the Medical College for MBBS is 50 and 54 PG seats in various departments. The process to increase MBBS seats to 100 is already going on. With upgradation of Medical College, the PG capacity of Medical College would be increased to 105 as per the new MCI guidelines.

BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur provides tertiary health care services to a large population from district Gorakhpur and adjoining districts of Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Siddharthnagar, Deoria, and Basti, and also from bordering districts of Bihar and neighboring country Nepal. The trust of people of people in this institution is reflected by whopping number of patients registered for OPD services (more than 3.5 lakh patients avail OPD services every year) and utilizing the IPD services (more than 40,000 patients are treated in IPD of BRD Medical College each year).
Apart from the routine OPD and IPD services, the institute provides a host of highly specialized facilities and services at very affordable cost (free for poor patients) like ventilator support in fully equipped ICUs, ICCU, hemodialysis, temporary/ permanent pacemaking, video EEG, balloon valvotomy, GI endoscopy, neurosurgeries, video gastroscopy, TURP, pediatric surgeries, etc to name a few.
This institution is associated with a number of National Health Programs like Reproductive and Child Health Program (Routine Immunization Program), JananiSurakshaYojana, Vector Borne Disease Control Program (the institute plays a vital role in control & treatment of and research on Japanese Encephalitis/ AES prevalent in this region), Integrated Disease Surveillance Project, etc. for the benefit of general population.
