Department was established in the year of 1973, under able guidance of Late Prof. B. P. Jaju. Initially there was admission of 50 students for undergraduate MBBS course. Department also trained additional 50 girl students for about 6 years, to tackle the shortage of lady doctors in the state. Later on post graduate course i.e. MD (Pharmacology) was also started in the department. Department has a well equipped all the under graduate and post graduate labs along with, research lab for teachers. The departmental museum -THERAPEUTIC JUNGLE, is one of the best among medical colleges of this state, displaying history in the form of therapeutic march, with year and events of pharmacological development, since 2500 BC, detailed models and charts on all important systems. Various dosage forms, sources of drugs (modern as well as medicinal plants, roots etc., poisons in different forms, along with detailed references, are neatly displayed in glass shelves. It provides deep insight and understanding of the subject, to students.

 

 

    Courses conducted in department : Undergraduate course MBBS and MD in Pharmacology

 

PG teacher also eligible to guide PhD in the subject of Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Clinical Pharmacology. For MBBS course, lectures, tutorials, demonstrations, pharmacy lab, experimental lab, clinical pharmacology exercises, clinical case projects, are conducted four days a week, along with monthly, six monthly evaluation test/ examinations. For PG course, seminars, journal club, PG classes, group discussions, thesis presentation and research, PG experiments (short and long) which is performed on recently acquired 16 channel computerized Data Acquisition System with accessories (ADI, Australia), UG teaching and lab, etc. are undertaken, on all working days along with theory and practical examinations at the end of course. M.B.B.S. degree is recognized by MCI & for M.D. degree recognition process has been started. Hopefully soon it will also be recognized. Department is well equipped with modern equipments & teaching aid systems. Present & past teachers have contributed in more than 100 research publications in national & international journals.

 

   Programmes Organised :       

              1.  Department has conducted different seminars, guest lectures, group discussions, under the

                   auspices of Pharmacological Society, BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur in different years, on

                   interesting and currently useful topics.

              2. Organised a Training Workshop for Private practitioners, on Tuberculosis control under IMA-

                  GFATM-RNTCP-PPM Project on 28th Sept. 2008, at Gorakhpur.

   Honors /Awards and academic activities of teachers

    a) Dr. P. P. Gupta, was awarded best poster prize, in Asian Congress of  Pharmacology, New Delhi, 1985  

    b) Dr. P. P. Gupta, received Dr. R K Jalota Award by Indian Medical Association (UP State) in 2006

    c) Dr. P. P. Gupta, received Presidents appreciation award by Indian Medical Association ( UP State) in

        2005 and 2007          

    d) Dr P. P. Gupta Chaired a session in IMA – UPCON 2007 at Meerut

    e) Dr. P. P. Gupta, has organized eight CME programmes for private physicians, on HIV/ AIDS

        prevention and treatment awareness, October /November 2006

    f)  Dr. P. P. Gupta, organized RNTCP sensitization  two CME programm under  auspices of IMA-

        GFATM-RNTCP-PPM project, in Feb/ Mar 2008.

    g)  Dr. P.P.Gupta received “Dr. Gyan P Lal & Dr. Suman Acedemic Achievement Award- 2008”, by

        Indian Medical Association UP State, for encouraging academic activities.

   Research in Department

        Various research projects have been conducted, by teachers of this department in past, and currently following research projects are going on - 

            a)    “Study of adverse drug reactions of various RNTCP regimens and its impact on outcome of

                   treatment in patient with adverse drug reactions”, in collaboration with department of TB and

                   chest Diseases.  

            b)   “Prophylaxis of migraine patients with Topiramate in India”, in collaboration with department

                  of Neurology. 

            c)   “Screening of anti inflammatory activity of Heterocyclic Compounds of Biological Interests”, in

                   collaboration with Department of Chemistry. IIT Roorkee.

            d)    Research work on “Preliminary screening of Anti inflammatory and Analgesic activity of

                   Thiazoline and Acridine derivatives” under chief investigatiorship of Dr.P.P.Gupta, in

                   collaboration of Department of Chemistry, IIT Roorkee.
