Nursing Student B.R.B Medical Center |

As a student of nursing, it is not enough that I learn theories and concepts inside the classroom. It is important that students are given the chance to experience first-hand what happens in different health care settings. This semester, I was assigned as a student nurse in a local hospital in our community. The learning outcome is to utilize what we have learned in the classroom in promoting health and preventing illness of the patients by collaborating with members of the hospital’s health care team. My instructor in the hospital was one of the senior nurses. She was assigned tothe Acute Care for Elders Unit of the hospital. The local hospital makes sure that the older persons are given the best medical care and that health professionals attend to their concerns until they achieve functional independence in doing their basic activities in their daily lives. Safety of the patients is also a priority. My instructor briefed me with the hospital policies and checked my knowledge on nursing practice. She would bring me along when she checked the patients and explained their condition. Eventually, she asked me to do the regular monitoring of the vital signs of the patients in the ward and I diligently recorded them in the charts. I would consult her whenever there was something that I was not sure of. I believe that it is best to ask questions rather than commit costly mistakes especially in our profession where people’s lives are at stake. I learned a lot from being a student nurse in the hospital. As a future nurse, I believe in the importance of having a safe environment for the patients by promoting a culture of safety in the health care setting. It is not just in the hospital facilities and equipment that we have, but more importantly, in the attitude and behavior of the health care professionals who should have a genuine concern for the safety of the patients.

Patient-Care Technologies to Address the Needs of a Diverse Patient Population

Patient-care Technology |

We are living in the digital age. Everything is computerized and systems are connected so that we can get relevant and important data whenever we need them and just with a click on the screen. We can retrieve, transmit, and can even manipulate data stored on the computer. This technology has made facilitation and transfer of information better in different businesses and industries. It is inevitable that technology and information have also influenced the healthcare industry. Healthcare organizations invest in patient-care technologies to help them in managing their business. Common examples of patient-care technology are the electronic medical record (EMR) and electronic health record (EHR) systems. EMR contains the standard medical and clinical history of the patient which is used for diagnosis and treatment. It is the digital version of the paper-based patient chart from a specific healthcare provider. EMR allows healthcare providers to track medical data across time, identify patients who need medical attention, monitor the records of patients and see how they compare against health parameters. However, the EMR system does not allow information sharing to other stakeholders. On the other hand, EHR contains the patient’s medical history from different healthcare providers involved in the care and treatment of the patient. EHR is more comprehensive and allows sharing of information among different healthcare providers and across different states. This is especially important in addressing global health issues such as facilitating the rapid assessment of disease outbreaks. Both systems facilitate the improvement of the quality of care given to patients.Patient-care technologies are developed to assist us in the management of a diverse population of patients. We have to keep up with the advancements around us and use the available technology to improve the quality of care that we offer to our patients. These systems and technologies, when used appropriately, will help us transform the health care system.

Health Promotion and Disease Prevention |

It is stated in one of the provisions of the Code of Ethics for Nurses that the nurse’s foremost commitment was to the patient, be it an individual person or a community of people. As such, nurses are bound by duty to advocate for health promotion and disease prevention so that individuals, families, and communities can live a high quality of life that is free from preventable diseases, disabilities, and injuries. Being respected health professionals, nurses are in a position to actively influence health policies and legislation. The methods they use entail individual involvement and government involvement to be able to move toward solutions to the health challenges that we face. Through individual involvement, nurses live a healthy lifestyle as an example to the rest of the community. In this way, they promote health and help prevent diseases by modeling and helping others adopt a better way of living. They also spread awareness of health issues that concern every member of the community. But sometimes, these efforts are not enough to enact change. Nurses have to be involved in the government to create a further impact on health policies and legislation. This move requires the collaboration of health professionals, concerned agencies, and individuals to promote health and disease prevention. As a community, they know the needs of the people when it comes to health protection. They serve as the voice of the people who clamor for health education, affordable health care, environmental protection, and support for the sick and elderly. Above all, it is the nurses’ moral obligation to support human dignity. Their advocacy is to support what helps people live a full life that is healthy and fulfilling in every sense of the word. They nurture wellness of all individuals regardless of age, sex, social status, or race. When we use this lens or sensitivity to guide our policies and legislation, we can be assured of proper provision for health promotion and disease prevention.
